Landscaping a Family Garden in Alsager
The Brief
This garden felt “closed off” … the old picket fencing was unstable, the large lower section was devoid of any interest and there was limited practical potential for family time. Our brief was to open up the space, add some life to the borders and create an outdoor dining and entertainment space. Here is what we created…
Our Site Assessment & Spec’
Problem: The original patio was slippery with loose slabs and grout failing.
Solution: Restoration with deep cleaning, partial relaying and grouting.
Problem: Access was limited to each side of the garden.
Solution: Wrap around steps built onto new concrete footings; solid concrete blocks clad in cut-paving slabs to match the patio
Problem: Lack of usable spaces
Solution: New lower patio with matching slabs on new 150mm depth sub-base, plus pergola with simple outdoor kitchen area.
Design & Construction Decisions
We opted for ‘Autumn Brown’ Indian Sandstone paving as, once the original slabs were, cleaned this was a very good match. It has slightly less colour variation than the close alternative of ‘Raj Blend’.
The steps were built of solid concrete blocks, onto a cured concrete platform with 150mm Type 1 MOT; for structural stability.
The soil was enriched with dug-in compost prior to planting to ensure availability of nutrients through progressive decay.

The Outcome
We unlocked the potential of this garden, so providing an open and safe space for all the family to enjoy. The children are surrounded by the colours, textures and smells of the plants whilst the family together have space to cook, eat, relax and simply be together… outside! We have essentially added a number of liveable and lovable spaces to their home!
The plants just need an annual tidy up each winter plus occasional weeding after mowing the lawn.
The upper patio is stable, look good and is free from trip hazards; whilst blending harmoniously with the new additions to the garden.
