New build gardens often begin with compacted subsoil and poor drainage. Without professional intervention, these conditions lead to ongoing problems.

The thing is, house builders do exactly that. They build houses. Getting rid of rubble costs money. It’s also amazing how quick it is to roll out a lawn, without proper preparation of soil and drainage. But that’s all that matters. 

Get it turfed quick and laying standard concrete slabs… so it looks ‘better’ and the house can be sold. That’s the priority for house builders, but this doesn’t create a garden you can be proud of like inside the house?

As suggested above, doing it properly depends on proper preparation. This means considering what the ground is like now, what the problems are and are likely to be then acting accordingly. 

Grass needs fertile, quality soil to thrive. Planting needs compost enriched soil, or free draining depending on the plants chosen. This brings in a question of drainage too. The patio typically needs to be on a 100-150mm deep subbase. Artificial grass needs Type 3 not Type 1 MOT. These are all things which a professional landscaper considers when planning, designing and installing your new garden.
