Audley Japanese Garden Planting, near Alsager.

The Brief

Our clients garden is her sanctuary, whilst an unnecessary fence line existed with wasted space and borders devoid of interest. An existing koi pond and rock embankments set the Japanese theme as did our client wanted hostas and coniferous plants. This project required careful planting design…

Soil testing for quality control following planting in Miles Green

Challenges & Solutions

Problem: Surface soil compaction plus run-off washing soil onto the path.

Solution: Digging to reduce compaction plus gradient reduction and planting with ground cover before mulch top-dressing.

Problem: Soil conditions unsuitable to typically acid loving (ericaceous) plants

Solution: Incorporation of ericaceous compost plus mychorhizal innoculant and other measures followed by pine-bark mulch on the surface.

Problem: Availability of required plants.

Solution: Visited plant nurseries across the country to hand select, collect and supply.

A garden in Miles Green with various evergreen shrubs and plants

We removed an unnecessary fence line to reclaim space. The base was unsightly so we installed a gabbion basket system along its base, giving a textural backdrop to the planting.

Pathway was narrow in one area, we we extended with carefully cut block paving.

Unused corner so we constructed a bespoke arbour for seating in shade and shelter.

Planting needed structural layers so we installed a combination of coniferous and deciduous trees, underplanted with hosta, heather, epimedium, hackonechloa and leptinella.

The planting choice was focused on texture and form with low maintenance, rather than colour.

The Outcome

Successful planting is all about the preparation, whilst choosing the right plant for the right place… the right soil, drainage and light conditions.

We extensively planned this planting combination with thorough, detailed consideration. We sourced the best quality plants from across the country and installed with thought to seasonal stresses.

Soil amendments will be maintained through decomposition of an acidic mulch of pine needles.

With correct care and maintenance, this garden will thrive plus mature and develop to give a stunning, interesting and holistically pleasing backdrop to a beautiful garden.
